My husband and I celebrate and exchange gifts on Little Christmas, the Epiphany, in early January. I balked when Tony first suggested this.  However, I quickly discovered: 1.  The hassle of running around and buy gifts for the 25th is eliminated, 2. The holiday season is a lot less stressful in general, and 3. We seize upon the post holiday sales, often saving a substantial amount of money. As the clock ticks away, I’ve rounded up some thought provoking and sometimes novel gifts presented by the editors of and writers for some of my favorite sites:

Travel + Leisure – I love Travel + Leisure and worked with them quite frequently in my previous life.  Three of their gift picks:

Vietnamese Coffee Kit
  • Sony Noise Canceling Headphones –  Digital Assistant Editor, Richelle Szypulski writes, “Sony’s newest over-ear headphones are so impressively good. They’ve made the latest model lighter and more comfortable to wear and increased the battery life to a whopping 30 hours. But above all, Sony focused on sound and, wow, it is delightfully immersive to listen to music with these on.”
  •  Vietnamese Coffee Pour-Over Kit – Associate Digital Editor Tanner Sanders enthuses over the kit, “This clever little system that’s designed to easily fit in your bag makes a truly wonderful Vietnamese coffee. Even better, the pack comes with enough supplies to make five cups of coffee, making the perfect gift for your coffee-obsessed friends heading out on vacation.”
  • Tablet Holding Cutting Board –Digital Assistant Editor, Elizabeth Preske, choose this goody, stating, “With this handy kitchen tool, my mom can prop up her iPad and easily follow the directions while she preps her meals. No uncomfortable neck craning or back bending necessary.” 

The Planet D – Dave and Deb of The Planet D offer up a Handpresso option, which is probably more up my husband’s alley than the Vietnamese coffee thingy. Unfortunately for him, this list isn’t being developed for him.  My picks among the 55 things the dynamic duo suggest:

Warm, Toasty Toes
  • Travel Towel –Dave and Deb write, “Even if you are staying in a 5-star resort, you often have to bring a towel with you when going on an adventure excursion.Instead of packing the clunky hotel towel, use this microfibre travel towel. It’s good for long multi-day treks or just a day at the beach. Quick dry and odor resistant make it a plus to have in your baggage.” 
  • Compression Socks – Deb, or Dave, wrote about their experience with the socks, “I tried them once a few years ago and they felt like they were squeezing my legs, my latest pair are so cushiony and cozy. The merino wool keeps odors away and they feel comfortable on a flight.” Compression socks intrigue me…hint, hint Tony Rivera.  

Town & Country:  Writer Caroline Hallemann knows how to pick great gifts and did a solid round up for ‘Jet Setters’

Twill Weekender Bag
  • Ollo Phototgraphy lens – I’ve often thought of this but have never investigated; you can get a get a set of lens for the iPhone at a pretty reasonable price. As Caroline states, “Help your Instagram-obsessed nephew rack up the likes with a set lenses for his phone which instantly up his photography skills.”
  • Mini Jewelry Case– OK, I like it because it’s cute. Caroline feels that you could “Help your less-than-organized mother secure her earrings, necklaces, and rings for travel in a chic croc-embossed leather jewelry case from Cuyana.”  The case is Cuyana’s coveted jewelry case, redesigned.  It has a soft felted pouch with satin drawstring ribbons at the interior to store your littlest luxuries. It also features the same belt detail for securing earrings and rings with ease.
  • Twill Weekender – This is so tempting and appears to be a useful size for that last minute weekend get-away.  Caroline agrees, “Have a friend who is always planning weekend getaways? Consider gifting them this simple-yet-sturdy weekender that doesn’t break the bank.”

Good Housekeeping: Good Housekeeping’s gift guide is culled from interviews with avid travelers, people always on the go. Writer Lindsey Murray goes so far as to state, “Going on a trip is a gift in itself, but certain add-ons can make the journey even more enjoyable.”  Three clever gift ideas I never would have thought of include: 

Fire TV Stick
  • FireTV Stick  “Nearly every hotel has a TV, but what happens when you want to watch your favorite streaming service? Just plug in this tiny device and, bam, it’s just like you’re at home!” — Nate H., 32, has traveled to 43 countries in the last year
  • JBL Portable Waterproof Wireless Bluetooth Speaker –  “I always travel with a small bluetooth speaker.  It hangs in my shower when I’mat home, but on the road, it is my portable entertainment system.  I can hang it in a hotel shower, on a backpack, or under a beach umbrella and play music, podcasts, or sound for a movie.” — Jay W., 40, world tour manager who has traveled to 42 countries
  • Audible Credits – “My absolute favorite travel-related gift is an Audible credit. When traveling it’s often hard to know how strong your cell service will be or if Wi-Fi will be available. Being able to download audio books directly to your device means you aren’t dependent on service for your on-the-go entertainment.” — Veronica H., age 32

Shopping and Baking and Decorating…Oh My!

The Woods of Warren, MA

As I settle back into reality from our week in the woods, I’m beginning to plot out those pesky things that need to be done for Christmas; you know shopping and baking and decorating.   First up is baking, this weekend’s project. 

I absolutely love to bake but don’t do it as much as I would like.  It’s just my husband and myself and baking for two leads to over-indulgence (and, he’s gone Paleo on me).  So to get my fix, I make cookies — hundreds of cookies — for my husband’s students, usually about 400 (which isn’t that many when you start doling them out).

On the list are My Italian Grandma’s Cookies, a standard; Biscotti from The Gourmet Cookbook edited by Ruth Reichl, a book stuffed with some of the best recipes that are relatively manageable to make; pumpkin cookies, a recipe ripped from Very Best Baking; and, new to the roster, traditional gingersnaps.  The gingersnaps were added last year and  while I didn’t feel they met proper gingersnap standards — I tasted them right out of the oven — I realized a few days later, the secret to a great gingersnap is to let them rest for a few days.

While not necessarily pertaining to baking, but having everything to do with Christmas, I tripped across a pretty cool website: Eat This, Not That!  A journalist I worked with in a previous life, Laurie Wilson, writes for them and penned a fantastic article, 24 Vintage Christmas Dinner Recipes.  It’s a fun article filled with fantastic bits and intriguing recipes from Christmas’ past.  For the traditionalists among us, check it out.

To all those who are serving or have served in the military, a heartfelt thank you for tirelessly protecting our rights and freedoms and for helping those countries and their people around the world whose rights and freedoms are continually under assault.  Or, as Dan Crenshaw would say, ‘Never Forget.’

Grandpa in Korea - outside bunkerIn honor of Veteran’s Day, I’m posting a picture of my Dad who served in the Korean War (which was a war, not a conflict).  He was a radio repairman and his repair vehicle was housed in the side of a mountain to hide and protect it from enemy fire.  He stands, in the picture, outside of the hidden truck.

For those looking for a more tangible way to say thanks this Christmas season, please consider donating to Wreaths Across America  whose mission is to ‘Remember, Honor, and Teach.’  It’s a beautiful way to remember those who are no longer with us and who have served in our military.  In addition to laying wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery as well as numerous other cemeteries across the country, they do a caravan from their home base in Maine, making key stops along the route to Arlington.  If you’re on close to one of their many stops on their wreath escort route, check out the caravan for an inspiring event.

With that, I bid everyone happy trails and safe travels.  And to those who have or are serving, my thanks, words can’t express my gratitude.

Here I sit, watching a Christmas movie — this one with Dogs and Kids, always a winning combination. I’ve yet to bake for Thanksgiving (in a nod to Ms. Scarlet, ‘I’ll worry about that tomorrow’).  Unfortunately, while I  cross referenced my baking list with the ingredients in the pantry, I forgot one key item — wax paper.  While I don’t mind being adventurous, making a pumpkin roll without wax paper isn’t high on that list. My husband and I did make bread dough, however.

NYC From Lambert CastleYes, we make our own bread.  Tony adheres to a Paleo diet which prohibits processed food, essentially eliminating flour and sugar from his diet.  While I’m not completely on the bandwagon, by default I’m also following a Paleo lifestyle. Tired of being breadless, a sad and unacceptable state, my husband started researching for, quite literally, ‘low carb bread that doesn’t suck.’  That, coupled with a few recommendations from his nutritionist, lead us to ‘Gluten-Free Artisan Bread in Five Minutes A Day.’ And, what do you know?  Following the book, its gluten free flour mixtures and master dough recipes churn out some darn good bread, that is actually pretty easy to make.  This is our second go-around making the dough and as I become more familiar with the wonders of yeast (I still haven’t figured that one out), we’ll dive deeper into the book as it has a fair amount of recipes — everything from white sandwich bread, to brioche and even flat bread and pizza doughs. #yummy.

Lambert CastleEarlier in the day we went to Lambert Castle in Patterson, NJ.  Yes there is a castle in Patterson of all places.  Home to the Passaic County Historical Society, their annual fundraiser is a holiday craft fair held throughout the month of November.  Driving up the side of Garret Mountain, we came upon what truly is a castle, built back in the late 1800s by a local silk baron (Patterson used to be known as the silk capital of the world). Walking into the castle itself, we were quickly submerged into all things Christmas as the building was stuffed to the rafters with all kinds of goodies — from provisions to ornaments and festive holiday decorations, to clothes for the kids and on and on and on — three floors of ‘on’ to be precise.

It was a fun day.  Not as productive as it could have been, but fun none-the-less.

Here I sit, in the kitchen, awaiting the arrival of my sister-in-law and niece, watching My Cousin Vinnie which is the perfect elixir as I do need to laugh. Prior to putting fingers to keyboard, I spent a good 3 hours cleaning out my 20-year-old email account as I’m switching ISPs.  A blast from the past, I tripped across a few tidbits worth sharing:

Zingerman'sZingerman’s: With the holiday’s coming up, we all need that trusty, go-to-source for food stuff; one of mine is Zingerman’s. A ‘community of businesses,’ Zingerman’s is a family of small, food-related companies located in the Ann Arbor, MI area.  Zingermans.com is ‘The Online Shop for Food Lovers’ featuring hearth baked breads, handmade cheeses, varietal coffee, estate bottled olive oils and customized presents. For me, the best part of visiting Zingermans.com are the cartoon pigs strategically placed throughout the site (I’m sure it’s some sort of ‘thing’).  At the bottom of each page is a flying pig with a quippy ‘Great food just flew to…’ and the city and state of the most recent shipment listed.  Absolutely brilliant, fun marketing.

Old Fashioned Pumpkin Cookies:  We don’t have kids, but that doesn’t mean I’ve escaped the ‘yeah, I need cookies for tomorrow’ plea.  Years ago, that very lament came my way at a time when I had limited supplies — sugar, a can of pumpkin, butter, and eggs. Muttering about the lack of ingredients, I googled pumpkin and found a recipe for Old Fashioned Pumpkin Cookies which are now a mainstay that I trot out throughout the fall and winter seasons (giving very little credit to Libby’s, of course).  Even if you’re unsure about a pumpkin cookie, you must try these; they are delicious and easy to make — what could be better?!?

Back to the emails.  A digital heavyweight is being lifted off my shoulders and it feels great.  Within the next month, my junk email will be virtually non-existent (until my new address gets sold). As I skim through the various mailboxes I created to see what I might want to keep, I’m finding all kinds of sites I may/may not want to revisit; in particular:

Very Best Baking: Apparently a Nestle website, it’s where I found the Pumpkin Cookie recipe.  Back in the day it was a ‘go to’ and extremely engaging site (of course the constant giveaways and contests didn’t hurt).  I’m not sure if Nestle owned the site then, but it was a fun, informative site you should consider checking out.  I’ll give a deeper report (more in depth than, ‘hey this used to be a cool site’) after I check it out.

TV Food Network:  Another site to revisit.  I love the station (OK, 1/2 the station, some programs drive me nuts; others, like the Baking Championship series I can’t get enough of).  I don’t visit the site frequently, I tend to default to my trusty cookbooks, however when I do need a recipe or am looking for something a bit different, that’s where I go.  If you haven’t visited, you should.

Avocados: A parting tip.  My husband loves his avocados (I could do without them), but they are a weird purchase — they either aren’t ripe or they are borderline ready to rot.  After a few shopping mishaps, I discovered what to do:  buy them by ripeness — a brown-skin soft sucker to be consumed immediately, light brown/green ‘cado to be eaten within the coming few days and the shiny, hard green avocados to be used a good week out.  Such a simple trick that brings satisfaction to those who eat them on a regular basis.

Before I part, I just have to squeal — OMG, Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp are engaged…what?!?
